Tracebridge Bed and Breakfast, Tracebridge, Somerset.
It was a great joy to help the owner of this glorious locally sourced slate-built cottage, a charming characterful dwelling nestled into the hill at Tracebridge, Ashbrittle, Somerset. We have had the pleasure of assisting B&B host Hazel with the interiors for Tracebridge Cottage for many years now. Hazel required experienced Interior designers in Somerset to embrace her project, which we did. We loved working with her to create her vision. “Tracebridge Cottage Bed and Breakfast is found nestling in the Somerset countryside. This charming slate built cottage, formerly three slate quarry workers cottages has been modernised yet retains some lovely original features.” - Tracebridge Cottage.
The interior is colourful but in a very restful way, perfectly entwining pops of playfulness, sophistication and simplicity. Each room holds its own theme, however the sense of flow throughout the house is seamless and considered. The warm tones of the fabrics compliment the historical stone walls and beams featured in most rooms. The warm earthy tones of green are consistent throughout Tracebridge Cottage extending the beauty of the garden outside in.
A speciality of ours, at Interior Design and Property Solutions Ltd (IDPS), is difficult windows and those skills here when handmaking blinds for the wonderfully wonky windows in this property. As experienced interior designers we had the priveldge of custom designing and manufacturing sofas for the cottage, reupholstered furniture, and handmade bespoke curtains, window seats and cushions for Tracebridge. The fabrics used for all the soft furnishings are gorgeous in print and colour quality. The style of the B&B is a real reflection of Hazel’s personality and it has been lovely to see the cottage blossom as she does.
Tracebridge Cottage Bed and Breakfast is overflowing with an abundance of character. With its higgledy-piggledy windows and doors, and where no wall is straight, it’s such a delightful place to be. Interestingly the property had once been an Old Inn, many moons ago, and it still holds that welcoming ambience. “Tracebridge Cottage has two double rooms. Rambling Rose room has a window seat which overlooks the front garden and a luxurious king size bed. Poppy room has stripped pine floor boards, window seat, multi-fuel stove and comfortable double bed. Guests have their own shower room and may also luxuriate in an extra deep Victorian style tub in the shared bathroom. ” - Tracebridge Cottage.
The B&B oozes appeal and has an understated flamboyance about it. In one of the bedrooms the colours are bright and cheery, very uplifting for the spirit. In the same notion the room you encompass a sense of calm, encouraged by the gorgeous flowers waving in the gentle breeze amongst the cottage garden. Visible from the tiny- characterful window, a perfect spot for a cup of tea. We, Sue Scammell Interiors, made a delightful custom roman blind for the window and introduced coordinating scatter cushions for the bed. The combination of the fresh white bed linen, cushions and a colourful throw are perfect for a delightful stay at the B&B.
The walls in the snug are painted in white tie by farrow and ball, encouraging light to bounce around the room. Sue Scammell Interiors reupholstered the chair and footstool to introduce a bit of pizzaz to the dining area, whilst maintaining a restful space but creating a vibrant center piece for a sociable room. We particularly love this chair; it is great quality and really comfortable. A piece of furniture that envelops you whilst resting your feet on the footstool, immersed in a good book by the crackling fire.
We had the pleasure of returning to Tracebridge Cottage B&B recently to help the client refresh the sitting room. The structural elements of the property in this area of the house are over 350 years old! The sitting room features an impressive original slate fireplace and floor, which is a natural focal piece in the space. So, we decided to enhance the soft tones of the slate fireplace and the muted tones in the oriental rug. This led us to source and select a mole-coloured velvet fabric to make into a new loose cover, for the rather lovely large squishy sofa.
As you know we love functionality at Sue Scammell Interiors, which is one of the reasons our clients rate us to be the best interior designers in Devon. The velvet fabric we chose for the loose cover is fully washable at 40 degrees, practical, hard wearing and adds a touch of luxury - perfect for a rural property and B&B requirements. We topped off the scheme with a variety of cushions with contrast piping. Continuing with linens and velvets, picking out the mellow blues in the rug and the soft pink in the Degas paintings mounted on the wall and of course the fireplace. Complimented by the central footstool in this room too and another wood burner, with two more occasional chairs makes a lovely sociable place to relax and chat. This simple but effective refresh has resulting in the room feeling very tranquil. A space that encourages you sink back into the luxury of the velvet and soak in the quiet and peace of this lovely cottage.
The sofa in the kitchen was upholstered in this fabulous, thick and sumptuous woven linen. The colours a little more demur, the flowers in the fabric echoing the terracotta floor tiles with their dimples and divots that have seen the passing of time. The background colour compliments the old pine table and the oak chairs and the soft green beckons the outside in. The kitchen has free standing furniture embracing a traditional cottage setting. A rustic yet elegant dresser holds many treasured pieces of antique China, and the window at the kitchen sink draws your eye to the enchanting rambling cottage garden. The handmade, made to measure custom blinds in the kitchen are made from a neutral linen. They are interlined with a thick domette interlining which helps keep the kitchen warm during the winter months. The colour is simple and doesn’t detract from the other features in the room, merely acting as a timeless backdrop. Sue Scammell Interiors reputation of having a high level of attention to detail meant we introduced ties onto the bespoke handmade seat cushions pads for the dining chairs. These sit beautifully at the old pine kitchen table. Another gorgeous detail in the kitchen is the coordinating green and terracotta stripe chunky linen cushion that adorns an old rocking chair, that is nestled in the corner of the room. The window seat has been softened with a comfy boxed seat cushion and scatter cushions with twisted cord piping. It is often these small details of contrast piping or fringing that can add those little details of luxury in an unstated way.
